In clinical studies where the effect of dose is examined, the findings are inconsistent. The meta-analysis by Weston et al (2016) and data from the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry and the Australian Pregnancy Registry failed to observe an increased risk of major congenital malformations with increasing doses of topiramate. The available clinical data examining the effect of topiramate on fetal loss are very limited and the findings are inconsistent (Ornoy et al 2008, Trivedi et al 2018, Vajda et al 2018, Veroniki et al 2017a).

• These differences may reflect the different methodologies and designs in the individual studies and limitations such as the potential for residual confounding and lack of a comparison to women with epilepsy in some studies.

Complex Needs / Complex Additional Support NeedsComplex needs typically refers to a mix of medical needs and developmental difficulties. Sometimes this term is cerebrumiq just used to mean developmental delays where there are many (and so, complex) causes. Without a list of the individual needs and difficulties, this term has extremely limited value.See Developmental Delay, below. Visual spatial skills are the ability to process visual stimuli to comprehend spatial relationships between objects and to visualize different scenarios or images.

The treatment of a disease or a condition where two or more medicines are used at the same time. The term is most often used to describe treatment of epilepsy with more than one drug. Examples include the Bayley Scales of Infant Development that is used to describe the current developmental functioning of infants and to assist in diagnosis and treatment planning for infants with developmental delays or disabilities. In a cohort study, a group of individuals exposed to a risk factor and a group who are unexposed to the risk factor are followed over time (often years) to determine the occurrence of disease. The incidence of disease in the exposed group is compared with the incidence of disease in the unexposed group. Epilepsy is also one of the most common neurological conditions in pregnancy and it is estimated that around 2500 infants are born to women with epilepsy every year in the UK (UK Epilepsy and Pregnancy Register).

Epilepsy medicines and the risks to the unborn baby

A baby for example is at this stage when it tries to take its first step and falls down. However, once baby takes the first few successful steps he has reached the “conscious competence” stage. Now over the next few weeks provided that baby consciously concentrates solely on the task, he can walk without failing. If, however, he gets a distraction which requires some attention he probably falls down.
